The Museum of the Home is the only museum in the world dedicated to exploring the meaning and experience of home. Housed within historic almshouses in East London, the museum examines how domestic life has evolved over the past four centuries through period interiors, everyday objects and contemporary displays. Through exhibitions, collections and public programmes, the museum invites visitors to consider how homes reflect changing ideas about family, identity, work, technology and community.
Event Description
Join artist and activist Alice Gabb for a workshop exploring the radical history of banner-making.
From peace campaigning to trade unions, Alice will provide examples that have inspired and shaped her own practice, exploring the visual culture of social movements and resistance.
Alice will guide you through banner construction and how to choose appropriate materials as you create your own banner. Through hand stitching and techniques such as applique and embroidery, you’ll sew a symbol that speaks to us about freedom, peace, liberation and resistance.
30 cm x 40cm long banners will be provided. Basic hand sewing skills are helpful but not required.
Alice Gabb is a Lettering Artist, Banner Maker and activist based in Cornwall. Her work is rooted in histories of banner makers’ past, of community organising and resistance, and has been featured in The Times, House & Garden, Stylist and more. Alice holds workshops and classes in banner making and modern calligraphy, as well as private lessons.
