Friday 4 September, 10 - 11 a.m.: Talk, Moon Landing at the Saatchi Gallery with Margo Selby

Saatchi Gallery, Duke of York's HQ, King's Rd, London SW3 4RY, United Kingdom

Margo Selby is a woven textile artist and designer, celebrated for her bold use of colour and pattern. Her work bridges the worlds of art and industry, characterised by geometric construction and a distinctive approach to colour. Sitting at the intersection of art, craft, and design, her practice explores the creative potential of woven textiles.

Event Description

moon landing is a multi-disciplinary collaboration between textile artist Margo Selby and composer Helen Caddick. In this talk, Margo will give an insight into how as a weaver she responded to Helen’s music, inspired by the little known story of the Navajo women weavers and the women, who used their dexterous skills and knowledge to create the integrated circuits, an essential component to the success of the 1969 Apollo 11 Moon Landing.

Selby’s long term fascination with the correlation between mathematics, science and weaving is reflected in her woven response to the project. The 16 metre hand woven textile length is a celebration of the mathematical and technical possibilities of weaving and the crossovers of pattern, tone and rhythm found in both music and textiles. In excess of 30,000 threads weave in multiple combinations to take colour and music on a journey side by side.

Guests should arrive at the gallery at 10 a.m. for check-in, Margo’s talk will commence at 10.30 a.m.

After the talk guests are welcome to explore the rest of the exhibition: The Sun and The Moon: Art Inspired by the Celestial.

Occupying two floors of the Gallery and spanning nine major exhibition spaces, the show presents artworks, installations, and objects that reveal how artists have responded to the Sun and the Moon.
