Joanna Kinnersly-Taylor is a Glasgow-based printed textile artist whose richly layered works are created through dyeing, painting and screen-printing onto linen in her studio. Trained at the University College for the Creative Arts, Farnham, and the Glasgow School of Art, she produces one-off textiles for interiors, exhibitions and site-specific commissions. Her work has been made for a wide range of settings, from a castle and hospitals to theatres, a quayside and offices. Working largely in abstraction, Joanna draws inspiration from the domestic landscape and the idea of layers — both metaphorical and physical. This fascination informs not just the imagery within her work but the way it is made. Through a rigorous sampling process, she develops bespoke colour palettes for each project, building depth, luminosity and transparency through her distinctive multi-layered printing technique. Alongside her studio practice, Joanna teaches courses and mentors artists in her studio, gives talks and lectures on degree and postgraduate programmes across the UK. Her work has been widely exhibited in the UK and internationally, often with the 62 Group of Textile Artists, and featured in books and magazines. She is the author of ‘Dyeing and Screen-Printing on Textiles’ (Bloomsbury), currently being expanded for its third edition.

From Essence to Substance – Creating Depth in Print
Immerse yourself in the studio and work of printed textile artist Joanna Kinnersly-Taylor as she guides you through her creative process, from seed to finished work. Joanna discusses key themes that shape her thinking and how her practice has evolved to embrace these core influences.
Screen-printing is often perceived, and misunderstood, as a quick process because of its potential for repetition. Joanna instead uses the medium to produce textiles with rich visual depth through a painstaking, labour-intensive approach. She examines her working methodology: filtering and refining source material, developing imagery for silk screens, and devising dyeing and print-paste recipes to build bespoke colour palettes through sampling. She will also explain her distinctive multi-layered printing process, which creates depth and transparency in cloth, and discuss the opportunities and challenges of working with photographic imagery on fabric.
Sharing colour swatches and a back catalogue charting her textile journey, Joanna highlights pivotal works that shifted her direction both technically and conceptually. Participants will gain insight into the decisions, experiments and persistence behind each finished textile.
The session concludes with a virtual tour of the studio, a demonstration of the screen-printing process, and a Q&A session with Joanna about her techniques and practice today.
