Friday 12 September, 2-4 p.m.: Workshop: Mend and Meet with Saskia Weir of Mend House

Goldsmiths Textiles Collection & Constance Howard Gallery, Deptford Town Hall, Goldsmiths, University of London, SE14 6AF

Join Saskia Weir, founder of The Mend House, for Mend and Meet – a relaxed, practical workshop designed to bring people together through the timeless act of textile repair. Mending has been part of human history for over 2,000 years. This session offers space to slow down, connect, and rediscover the quiet satisfaction of making something whole again.

Whether you are entirely new to mending or looking to refine your skills, Weir will guide participants through the basics of visible and invisible mending for woven fabrics – including cotton, linen, and silk – with support for more advanced repairs where needed. You will learn a variety of techniques, have time to practise them, and begin to apply them to a woven item you bring with you. This could be a cotton shirt, a linen dress, or any garment made from woven cloth. All tools and materials will be provided.

Founded in 2020, The Mend House is a growing community of repairers who believe that repair beats replace. Through workshops, services, and advocacy, Weir champions a more sustainable, less wasteful relationship with the things we wear and use every day.

Materials provided: Basic mending supplies, fabric scraps, thread, and needles.

Materials to bring: A woven garment or textile in need of repair, any personal fabric scraps or embellishments you wish to use.

All skill levels are welcome. This gathering is not only about skill-building, but also about reimagining repair as a joyful, creative, and communal act. Come with something to mend and leave with something renewed – along with the knowledge and confidence to keep mending long after the session ends.
